CHENNAI: With Left parties showing signs of cosying up to opposition AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Saturday alleged that AIADMK is "not secular" as it had supported the Karseva before the Babri masjid demolition.

The DMK chief also said, "it was the AIADMK which enacted a law against religious conversion".

Speaking to reporters after the DMK district secretaries meet here he said, "the AIADMK is not secular as it had supported the Karseva before the Babri masjid demolition. It was the AIADMK which enacted a law against religious conversion".

The charge came when his attention was sought on Left parties remarks that they would consider aligning with the AIADMK, if the Dravidian party announced its commitment to secular principles.

The CPI-M and the CPI had announced that they would not continue in the DMK-led alliance if it did not snap ties with the Congress.  They had also stated that they would consider a tie-up with the AIADMK, if it assured them of its secular credentials.

On Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's remark that the PMK should come back into the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance, Karunanidhi said it was his 'wish'. "I have not told him that the PMK should come back."

Clarifying his stand the Dravidian stalwart said "I had only stated it was sad that some parties, which were in alliance, had parted ways".

On power shortage in the state, he said "the Centre was not withholding power supply. The entire country is facing power shortage. Even last year, we had the same situation."
