The NHAI wants the govt’s help to clear the Durgapur expressway

KOLKATA: A total shutdown at the Tata Motors’ Singur plant has continued for the second day, as Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee is adamant of seeing it through to the end and carry on with her chaotic indefinite “gherao” there.

The company officials too make it clear that that work will not be renewed there unless the situation improves. A Tata Motors spokesperson told DNA here on Saturday that
there had been no improvement in general situation at Singur so far. “Hence, the conditions are still not conducive for resuming work today. We are continuing to access the situation closely,’ she said.

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court’s directive on Saturday asking National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) to immediately clear the blockade of Singur-adjacent Durgapur Expressway does not seem to have any impact on Mamata, who is reluctant as before in asking her followers to clear the expressway.

The NHAI project director, A Kumar, personally met Mamata on Saturday requesting her to clear expressway. However, Mamata flatly turned down her offer and to add to the chaos her followers constructed an additional camp on the other side of the highway thus blocking both the lanes of the expressway.

Later Kumar discussed the matter in details with the Hooghly district magistrate, N Mina and district police superintendent, R Mishra. He told reporters that if necessary central forces like Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) or Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) can be used to clear the expressway. “If necessary, we may also take the help of the state police,” Kumar said.
