What do you say about a film that takes a fairly successful comedy like Bruce Almighty and then manages to take all the fun out of it? There's a hilarious scene in the 2003 Tom Shadyac film where Bruce (Jim Carrey), now playing God while the real God is on vacation, sabotages his rival Evan's (Steve Carrell) television broadcast. In Rumi Jafrey's tepid rehash of the film and scene, Arun (Salman Khan) sabotages his rival Rocky's (Sohail Khan) show in the same way, but completely without the humour of the original.

God Tussi Great Ho gives you an earache too, with all the actors shouting through the opening hour: Either at one another or at God or just because that's what the director seems to have asked them to do, right from Salman's woe-is-me Arun, to a bitter and bored father (Anupam Kher), the neighbourhood maid, lottery ticket-seller and of course Arun's nemesis Rocky. Fortunately Priyanka Chopra's character Alia keeps it toned down. The myriad of loud and annoying peripheral characters contribute little to the story or humour.

Amitabh Bachchan has a brief role as God, and delivers with practiced ease. Salman has moments of charm, but at other points, his deliberate and long-drawn out dialogue delivery grate. The director adopts old fashioned tricks — like introducing the backs of characters and having them turn to face the camera; or slotting in too many songs (mostly poor compositions) forcibly. Those unfamiliar with Bruce Almighty might find some entertainment in this copy, but otherwise this film's fortunes need more than god's blessings.
