Focuses on consumer market to reach the mark by the next fiscal

NEW DELHI: Dell Inc, the second-largest PC maker in the world, is eyeing revenues in excess of $1 billion by fiscal 2009-10 from India, its fastest growing market, on surging demand for laptops and increased focus on consumer market.

In its early years, the computer maker was concentrating on the corporate segment, from where it derives most of its revenues in the country. It has recently started addressing the consumer and small and medium businesses.

In the first quarter, Dell had 7.6% market share in the overall PC business in India, according to estimates by IDC. However, the company said it is a market leader among large corporate businesses.

“In the corporate segment, Dell is by far the number one player in India. In the government business, we attained 9% market share in a span of five quarters and grew our consumer business by 500% in the first quarter. So we are on our way,” said Sameer Garde, general manager, Dell India.

The world’s largest PC maker HP and homegrown HCL share the top two spots in the country, followed by Dell for the PC business.

“Our run rate for 2008 is $800 million, which is on average $200 million each quarter. We should be able to achieve $1 billion (revenue) next year (2009-2010) from India,” said Paul-Henri Ferrand, president (Asia Pacific), Dell.

The PC maker is also planning to introduce its new breed of laptops especially for the Indian market at a much lower price point.

“We will start delivering notebooks and desktops at a pretty low price in India… stay tuned,” Ferrand said.

Dell has doubled its sales force in India over the past year and is expected to double that over a period of time depending on the business it gets. “In India, we have about 30,000 people which makes it the second most populous country for Dell after US,” Dell’s chief executive Michael Dell, who was on a visit to Delhi to launch their new series of notebooks, said.
