Manoj Kumar has won the case against the makers of the film Om Shanti Om, but that is not going to stop the city’s funnymen from taking digs at anyone. “All I have to do is call him Tanoj Kumar. How will anyone file a defamation suit against me?” says Kunal Vijaykar, who hosts The Week That Wasn’t along with Cyrus Broacha on a television channel, which spoofs celebrities.
“Such cases don’t change our lives as humourists. Besides, only when you file a case against a Shah Rukh Khan, do you make news,” scoffs Vijaykar.
Veejay Cyrus Sahukar, who spoofed Simi Garewal on his show ‘Semi Girebaal’ on MTV, believes that you only make fun of people you love. “Shah Rukh himself gets spoofed all the time. We Indians need to lighten up a bit. It’s good for our culture,” says Sahukar. Only recently, actor Rakhi Vijan played the character of Mukti Kapoor in the film Money Hai Toh Honey Hai - a clear take-off on television producer Ekta Kapoor.
“But I only did what my director asked me to do,” says Vijan.
Lately, people from the film industry have been accused of making fun of, or putting down, their colleagues. While Aamir Khan wrote about a “dog named Shah Rukh” on his blog, this week’s Singh is Kinng has a scene where actor Ranvir Shorey beats up actors wearing masks of Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and others.
“It wasn’t meant to poke fun of these superstars,” defends the film’s director Anees Bazmee. “You would wear masks of only those who are popular, right? I would never dream of putting any of these film stars down. And the audiences are finding it hilarious,” he says.
