MUMBAI: Aksh Optifibre, the Delhi-based manufacturer of optic fibre cables, has started  offering a television-based search through its internet protocol TV (IPTV) platform that was launched in collaboration with state-owned telecom major BSNL in Jaipur on August 4.

IPTV is a mode of television content provision that uses internet protocol to offer interruption-free reception and features such as video-on-demand, deferred viewing of a programme and yellow pages, among others.

Called A-Tube, the new service allows TV viewers to search among advertisements, yellow pages, customised video broadcast and others.

Namrata Sengupta, assistant general manager (corporate strategy), said the company is looking at earning revenues from advertisers for this service. So far, Aksh has secured 100 connections for its IPTV service in Jaipur.

Meanwhile, the company is moving ahead on partnerships with telecom carriers to offer IPTV services and has partnered with MTNL for New Delhi and Mumbai. It recently announced the roll-out of the service for BSNL broadband subscribers in 20 cities.
Its growth in the IPTV segment, however, may take some time if BSNL lags behind in setting up infrastructure for the roll-out.

“After the hype, Aksh has a total of just 4,500-5,000 IPTV subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai. This is largely because BSNL has fallen behind schedule in laying fibre optic cables from its exchanges to homes,” said a Mumbai-based telecom analyst, on condition of anonymity. Fibre optic cables enable faster and interruption-free transfer of signals.

The analyst said that telecom companies are pushing to increase their broadband user base through various services.

Meanwhile, Aksh is planning to invest about Rs 400 crore in its joint venture with BSNL to offer IPTV in 20 cities in Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The company has tied up with content providers such as Eros and Shemaroo and is in final-stage talks with some broadcast houses, said Sengupta.

As per its unaudited financial results, the company posted a loss of Rs 9.8 crore in the April-June quarter on revenues of Rs 34.5 crore.
