NEW DELHI: Pranksters are giving a tough time to police, parents, students and schools in the capital. For the third consecutive day on Friday, anonymous phone calls and SMSes of bombs and blasts in schools created panic in Delhi.

At around 8.40 am, Guru Nanak Public School, Rajouri Garden, received an anonymous call threatening blasts.

“School authorities informed the police within minutes of the call. A bomb disposal squad with search teams and sniffer dogs was rushed to the school. Students and teachers were told to vacate and the school remained out of bounds for over two hours while being searched. But it turned out to be a hoax call,” deputy commissioner of police Sharad Aggarwal said.

The series of threat calls to schools across the capital and neighboring Gurgaon began on Wednesday. A private school in Vasant Vihar got the first call on Wednesday evening threatening blasts.

The rumours continued on Thursday after some parents and school authorities received “SMS forwards” about possible explosions in schools. The police had to stage security drills in several schools in Delhi. Gurgaon Police too searched the premises of Shri Ram School after a threat SMS.

The police maintained there was no threat to any school and urged parents not to forward any threat messages received. However, a senior officer confirmed security had been beefed up around schools and random searches were being carried out.

He said police teams were being sent to various schools to sensitise the authorities and students. Authorities in some well-known schools have also been told to not allow children to meet outsiders during lunch breaks. Also, parents and visitors have been told to not park their cars inside school premises.

The police have received close to 60 hoax “bomb” calls since January. Officials said there is always a spurt in hoax calls after major terror attacks, such as Bangalore and Ahmedabad, in the country.
