MUMBAI: Whether it rules the box-office for long or not, theatres across Mumbai have pulled out all stops for the release of Singh is Kinng.

Cinemax will have 28 shows a day at its multiplex in Versova, which means the entire theatre is booked for one film. At the other end of town, Adlabs’ Metro is screening 22 shows in a single day.

Besides the fact that current Khiladi No. 1 Akshay Kumar is starring in it, what has swung things for Singh is the fact that there are no other big contenders for the crown.

“We have 28 shows a day and we have given the film more screen space because it is the only big release this week,” says Cinemax spokesperson Girish Wankhede.
Akshay’s star has been on the ascendant for the past two years. Almost all his films have been hits except for Yashraj Films’ Tashan.  “This is the biggest opening for an Akshay Kumar film. It is on par with any Shah Rukh Khan film, it could be even bigger. It, perhaps, has more advance booking than Om Shanti Om in certain areas, but not necessarily all over the country. We will have to wait and watch how the film fares,” Wankhede said.

“The film has a historical opening partly because it does not have any competition. Om Shanti Om did not open on this scale because it clashed with Saawariya’s release. My theatre Metro has 22 shows of only Singh is Kinng in a day. Those multiplexes which have four screens will have 15 shows a day. So it’s a huge thing,” said an Adlabs spokesperson.

There is also a buzz that the film has fetched a phenomenal amount for distribution. According to sources, the film has managed to notch a record-breaking Rs5 crore for Punjab and Central India province. Confirming the news, producer Vipul Shah said, “It is not just Punjab, the film has got a fantastic opening in Kolkata and Bihar too.”
