MUMBAI: Nearly a year after Om Shanti Om hit the theatres, veteran actor Manoj Kumar has filed a case against Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan and Sony Entertainment seeking a stay on telecast of the film.

Kumar was miffed over a few scenes in OSO which are a spoof on him. However, the dust had settled after SRK and Farah Khan visited him and apologised.

What has got Kumar worked up now is that Sony Entertainment Television has bought the rights of the film. He has filed a suit in the Dindoshi civil court seeking a stay on telecast of the film by the channel.

In case, the film is allowed to be telecast, the actor has pleaded that the scenes which insult his “character and personality” should be deleted. The case will be heard in the Dindoshi court on Wednesday.

Kumar has sought a stay on the telecast of the film on television arguing that television “carried more impression upon the viewer” than cinema.

“I was not in town. My solicitor did advice me to take legal action. I told him to ensure the fight is not stretched to such an extent that there can be no reconciliation. We had given them sufficient time to rectify the situation. We don’t live in the Stone Age. No one has the right to take potshots at someone else,” says Kumar.

Earlier too, Kumar had demanded that the ‘offensive’ scenes be deleted. SRK and Farah had reportedly reassured him it would be done. But that didn’t happen. Kumar had then told DNA: “I am not here to beg for anything. If he (SRK) has committed a crime, he should realise he has to personally apologise to me. In my 50 years of work, I have never held a press conference or hired a PR person. I have been extremely tolerant, but if someone hits me below the belt, it is unpardonable.

The film shows me being lathicharged at a film premiere because the police fail to distinguish me from an impersonator. Can the Mumbai police hit a known star in a public place? It is like saying anyone can impersonate Shah Rukh Khan and the real SRK can be lathicharged for trying to attend the premiere of his own movie. How can I accept such humiliation?”

Though the entire controversy had been laid to rest after a contrite SRK turned up at Kumar’s house, old wounds seem to have been reopened.

Farah Khan, when contacted, said, “Please speak to someone from Red Chillies about this.”

Executive vice-president of Sony Setmax Sneha Rajani says the channel has not yet been notified about the case. “We are not aware of these developments. Our legal department will decide on the action to be taken,” she added.

CEO of Red Chillies, Bobby Chawla, refused to comment.
