SRINAGAR: As violence spreads in restive Jammu, the state government has launched a massive crackdown on the media forcing two local cable news channels to go off air in the winter capital. Take-1 and JK Channel have been asked to stop beaming news after the deputy commissioner, Jammu, Mandeep Bhandari served them a notice for what he called “provocative coverage and half-truths about the situation”.

“Under section 5 and 6(I) of the cable network act, we have asked the channels to stop transmitting news content. We have asked them to stop beaming only news because their coverage was provocative and they were showing half truths,” said Bhandari.
Bhandari also noted that the channels should be registered if they want to beam news content. “In this case, the channels were violating the norms,” he said.

Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS), spearheading the campaign against the revocation of the land allotment order, was also asked to vacate the office. “Some army men came to our office and asked us to vacate the premises. We have been communicating to all our members over the telephone and have unanimously decided to extend the bandh by another five days,” said Leela Karan Sharma, convener of SASS.

Violence has also spread to other areas forcing authorities to extend curfew to two more districts including Udhampur and the Muslim majority district of Rajouri. Despite the army posted in the area, “people clashed with the police after defying curfew for the 11th day in Muthi, Bishna and other areas. The police fired several rounds causing injuries to some protesters,” added Sharma. However, Bhandari said, “The situation is now under control.”
