ISLAMABAD: An Indian lady, who was tortured, robbed of her assets and property worth over Rs10 million and subsequently held hostage in Lahore, has been recovered by the Police.

According to the bailiff’s report, the recovered woman (Shabnum) had lower leg fractures. “The detainee appears to be a crippled lady as she has been brought in the court on a chair,” the report stated. She had converted to Islam 20 years ago and had migrated to Bahrain with the help of some Indian clerics after her family tried to kill her.

She completed her studies there and married a Pakistani. However, after a few months of her wedding, she came to Pakistan and found that Ali Ahmad was already married and had five children. The first wife of her husband and children did not accept her, after which she returned to Bahrain and got divorce from Ali.

Back in Bahrain, Shabnum’s Pakistani neighbour Mirza Shaukat convinced her to invest her money in Pakistan by setting up madrassas. She then visited Pakistan in 2006, and bought two houses. She rented out one of the houses and established a madrassa in the other. She returned to Bahrain, and later found that Shaukat and his accomplices had taken over both the houses, on which she got two cases registered against them.

Shabnum alleged that on June 14, 2008, she was heading towards the airport to buy a ticket for Bahrain when some armed man including two uniformed policemen, arrested her.

They tortured her and  took her thumb impressions on blank papers besides snatching Rs 22,000 and  jewellery worth Rs 500,000, making her to sign two cheques of Rs 500,000 and Rs 2 mn for her release.
