VASHI: Nerul-resident Rajkumar Oberoi had never imagined that his name would one day be linked to terror attacks in the country. But on Monday Oberoi was shocked to see investigators at his door. Of the four cars connected to Ahmedabad blasts, one belonged to Oberoi.

The Maruit 800 that was used in the explosion in front of a hospital was registered in his name. The car was stolen from Oberoi’s building compound a few weeks before the blast.

“We are tired of being questioned about our car that was stolen a few weeks ago. I had even registered a complaint with the Nerul police station,” said Oberoi’s wife. “I never imagined that our stolen car would cause us so much grief. We haven’t had a moment of peace.”

The anti-terrorism squad had traced three of the four vehicles that were found abandoned in Surat to people in Navi Mumbai. “All the three cars were reported to be stolen from different parts of Navi Mumbai. While the first was stolen from Sector 6 in Vashi, the second was stolen from Nerul and the third from Panvel,” said a police officer. “It is a serious matter and therefore the owners of the vehicles are being subjected to extensive questioning.”

The disclosure of the vehicles’ identity and the presence of the media has left the concerned families flustered. Not willing to be subjected to further questioning, they have chosen to remain elusive. The Sector 6 Vashi residence of Neeta Mahadeo, owner of the Wagor-R that was used in the blast in front of a hospital, wore a deserted look.

While no one answered the doorbell, the closed windows clearly indicated that the family had fled their home to escape the media. “I presume it was media frenzy that prompted the Mahadeos to leave their home for a few days,” said a neighbour. Neeta’s car was stolen on July 7 this year.

Car thefts are common
Navi Mumbai has been witnessing a spate of car thefts. The number of vehicle thefts registered in the first half of 2008 is 419. The corresponding figure for the same period in 2007 was 349. Vashi, Nerul and Sanpada have reported the maximum cases of vehicle thefts.
