BANGALORE: Efforts to strengthen security in Electronic City, the hub of  IT companies in Bangalore ran into a road block as the organisation that was to implement it was not able to cobble together the funds required to install hi-tech security gadgetry as recommended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in its report prepared over a year ago.

The report had assessed the vulnerability of Electronic city which is home to 120 IT companies including big names like Infosys, Hewlett-Packard, Wipro, TCS and others.

The report,  released to the Electronic City Industries Association (Elcia), a cluster of IT and BPO firms in April 2007 (a copy of which is with DNA) revealed that the area had loopholes which terrorists and local thugs could manipulate to carry out attacks and kidnapping for extortion.

While the recommendations were approved by the Elcia, the price for their implementation at Rs 6 crore was found to be high and only a  part of it was implemented. The Elcia managed to put together Rs50 lakh and an additional Rs10 lakh for maintenance expenses for a few low-end gadgets.

“Safeguarding the IT belt that brings in revenues of over Rs 10,000 crore every year is all the more important given the circumstances,” an official said. The CISF report had mentioned that industries in the Electronic City are facing serious threats which have been revealed during the recent interrogations. Some LeT militants, who were captured in New Delhi two years ago gave pointers to these threats, it said.

Bangalore has been a hideout of terrorist sleeper cells  spread throughout the city, admits the police. Terrorists nabbed have revealed plans to target IT bigwigs like Infosys, Hewlett Packard and Wipro, they say.
