MPs are keen to look at their prospects in the upcoming LS polls

NEW DELHI: The dominant factor in the NDA’s effort to garner support against the government’s vote of confidence on July 22, is the irrelevance of the anti-defection law for MPs.

As a JD (U) leader explained, the concern of the MPs is not so much the remaining tenure in the present Lok Sabha as the prospect of winning the elections due in a few months and returning to parliament. “Which banner, which party can help them win in the coming elections is what matters to the MPs,” he said.

This is the tack being used to attract MPs from Lalu Yadav’s RJD, since the party’s prospects in the coming elections are not seen as very bright in an ever-changing situation. Currently, there are four RJD MPs whom JD(U) is talking to.

On the other hand, NDA’s attempts to get Jharkhand Mukti Morcha appear to have run into trouble. Three of its MPs plan to support UPA, sidelining their chief, Soren. JMM and some MPs from the north east are  the ones seen as open to switching sides without their electoral prospects getting harmed.

For some others, the political line taken now would matter in the coming elections and this being played up by BJP to keep the NDA together. If the Shiv Sena favours the nuclear deal and the Akali Dal has qualms due to this and the additional factor of voting against a Sikh PM, the BJP is stressing the fact that the vote is not only on nuclear deal bur against the government’s performance.

“Discussion on the confidence vote would focus on four years of misrule,  failure to control price rise, betrayal of the farmers, failure on internal security front and the compromise of India’s sovereignty in the Indo-US nuclear deal,” said BJP spokesman Prakash Javdekar.
