SP-BSP war of words gets a pre-trust vote push

LUCKNOW: As the day of reckoning for the UPA government draws near, a rather unseemly war of words has ensued between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP).

SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday dubbed the Mayawati government a “gang of goondas”. Not to be left behind, the BSP called SP leader Amar Singh a “dalaal” (middleman) and said the SP was adept at using greenbags for buying legislators.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mulayam said: “Mayawati has the maximum number of goons on her side. The atrocities on SP activists during her regime reminds me of the early eighties when people were being killed in false encounters on the basis of caste.” Talking about the trust vote slated for July 22, he said: “All our MPs are with us, though many are being terrorised. But there is no question of any succumbing to the lure of money. We have come to know that crores of rupees are being distributed to jailed MPs in UP and their cases are being withdrawn to convince them to vote against the UPA.”

However, he rubbished the allegation that the UPA was offering Rs25 crore to buy MPs. “The next time I meet Mr Bardhan, I will ask him where this kind of money is available.”

The BSP retaliated by rubbishing allegations that it offered the SP’s Pratapgarh MP, Akshay Pratap Singh, Rs30 crore to vote against the UPA government. It described the statement as “shameful and totally baseless” and warned the SP MP that “he would have to pay for his misdeeds”.

State BSP president and cabinet minister Swami Prasad Maurya said: “The SP is adept in the art of buying and selling MPs and MLAs. We don’t believe in horse-trading.”
“Amar Singh has already got wide recognition as a ‘dalaal’. First it was Lalu Yadav who recognised his ‘talent’ as a power broker and now LK Advani has said the same,” he added.
