Multiplexes and single-screen theatres that were served suspension notices two months ago for not exhibiting Marathi films for at least four weeks in a year have been asked to submit an undertaking for renewal of their licences.

“If you want the licences renewed, file an affidavit promising that the shortfall in the exhibition period of Marathi films will be covered this year,” deputy chief minister RR Patil told theatre owners on Tuesday. The licences of nearly 70 theatres have been suspended.

In a meeting at Sahyadri Guest house, theatre owners contended that in areas like south Mumbai, there were not enough audience for Marathi films. But Patil told them they will have to abide by the government’s rules.

Patil said a 12-member committee will be formed to suggest modifications in policies. It will submit its report in 45 days.

Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association’s vice-president Nitin Datar said government’s rules on single-screen threatres were arbitrary. “When we exhibit Marathi films, it becomes difficult for us to cover the expenditure on showing the films.”
