The regional media in Karnataka juggled issues like the Amarnath temple controversy, reality show tragedy and the N-deal with each trying to interpret a logical outcome of the happenings. Write ups on the N-deal and the bandh flooded the front pages of Kannada newspapers like — Vijaya Karnataka, Varta Bharati, Udayavani and Kannada Prabha.

The Vijaya Karnataka chose to be critical of the J&K government’s ‘anti-Hindu behaviour’ blaming the anarchy in the state for their lack of taking any initiative to decide policies protecting India’s interest. “Since October 26, 1947, J&K has become an equivalent to the word ‘problem’,”quoted an opinion column in the newspaper.
“Secularism in J&K does not mean protecting the interest of the minority and rejecting the majority community... It is for vote purpose to protect the interest of the majority (Muslims) and reject the minority community (Hindu) in J&K,” the newspaper stated.
However, Udayavani another regional newspaper cited: “The (Amarnath temple trust) issue has only provoked Hindus in other parts of India. The radical Hindu groups such as the Bajrang Dal and VHP have converted Karnataka into Gujarat by attacking a senior government official for not closing down the offices.”

Udayavani also donned the role of a reality show judge in the case of Shinjini Sen Gupta (16), a reality show participant, who got paralysed after she was rebuked by judges on a reality show. “If one wins..., the other five have to lose. We should... understand what competition is all about rather than feeling depressed or guilty for not winning,” said Udayavani.

Vijaya Karnataka, however, chose to make judgments on the judges. Opined that accomplished and talented singers like SP Balasubramanyam are the only ones fit to be judges, it said: “Others who do not even know that a talent has to be nurtured... like an art come to judge the attire and make-up,” the newspaper criticised.

Newspapers also chose to make a big deal on the N-deal. Giving its verdict that the N-deal will write the end of the UPA government led by Congress Kannada Prabha, it said: “The Left giving a deadline of July 7 on sending a representative for the talks and PM Manmohan Singh flying to attend the G-8 conference is not incidental, but pre-planned to increase the pressure.”

But Udayavani said: “By seeking support from the SP the women reservation bill could never be passed. Though the PM is listing the benefits of the deal, the previous agreements in 90s... increased inflation and will fail Indian scientists who have opposed establishing nuclear energy establishment.”
