Maanyata’s ex-husband gave them the slip after dining at a hotel; recaptured

The five-star lunch was sumptuous, but they did not get a chance to gloat over it. Instead, three member of a Hyderabad Police team huffed and puffed behind a fugitive on Tuesday.

Blame it on Mehraj Sheikh, former husband of Maanyata, who had cried hoarse at her and Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt for marrying “in violation to Muslim norms”.

Mehraj, an accused in the custody of Hyderabad Police, spun a con plot to shake off his escorts. After dining at Taj Landsend, Bandra, he gave the cops the slip and ran to the office of a private news channel in Mahalaxmi. The five-hour chase ended with a team from NM Joshi Marg police station swooping down on him at the channel studio. They handed Mehraj over to Bandra police, who slapped him with charges of cheating and escaping from police custody.

“Dining with the Hyderabad Police team, I had five bottles of beer and a peg of rum,”  Mehraj told private news channels after being recaptured by the cops. “Mumbai Police are harassing me because I blew the lid off the Dutt-Maanyata marriage.”
Mehraj, who was in Arthur Road jail, was taken to Hyderabad on June 28. The next day, he was produced in Secunderabad sessions court on charges of sending lewd sms-es to women actors. Following it, the three-member police team was bringing him back to Mumbai. They were to hand him over to Arthur Road jail authorities by 6 pm on Tuesday.

They reached the city by bus around 3.30 pm. The cops were hungry, and Mehraj suggested that they go for lunch at Taj Landsend. The four ordered food; Mehraj, according to the cops, even ordered beer.

When the bill, which was over Rs10, 000 was brought to their table, the accused excused himself. He told the escorting cops that he wanted to photocopy some papers and went out. Surprisingly none of them went with him.

“He went out on the pretext of photocopying some papers and escaped. Hyderabad Police will take action against the escorting cops, if they are found guilty,” said Prakash George, senior inspector, Bandra police station.

“Mehraj and the police team came to our hotel to have lunch. He went out to photocopy some papers, and escaped. The bill of over Rs10,000 is yet to be cleared,” said a spokesperson from the hotel.
