MUMBAI: When it comes to international movies, home video labels are finding a world of opportunity in the segment.

Following Moser Baer’s suit, which tied up with Palador to launch a slew of world cinema titles, home video major Excel has also decided to enter this segment.

Excel has partnered with NDTV Lumiere, the world cinema initiative from NDTV Imagine, to distribute award-winning movies from international film festivals.

Lumiere has already begun theatrical screening of these films under an existing partnership with PVR Cinemas, and come July, it will roll out these films on home video.
All these film videos will have subtitles in English and will be targeted at the growing population of international film lovers.

Muslim Kapasi, CEO, Excel Home Videos, said these titles, to begin with, will be released on DVDs and will be priced at Rs 499.  A potential release in Blu-Ray format has been planned for the future, but there are no plans to release these films on VCD as of now.

Excel Home Videos will distribute these internationally-acclaimed movies through its extensive reach of over 15,000 retail/rental outlets and a penetrating distribution network spread across 91 cities in India.

At the outset, movie buffs will have access to 10 titles on DVDs, which include movies such as The Orphanage, Climates, Under The Bombs, Crossing The Bridge, Head On, Goodbye Children, The Lovers, Breath, Yella, and Half Moon.

These movies will showcase the works of directors like Fatih Akin, Louis Malle, Kim Ki-Duk, Philippe Aractingi, Christian Petzold, Bahman Ghobadi, Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Juan Antonio Bayona.

A new film will be released on DVD almost every week.

“The category has seen a lot of attention lately. We already distribute movies for Walt Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, MGM, HIT Entertainment, Shringar Films, Merchant Ivory Productions and now world cinema will serve as a refreshing change in addition to the 1500-odd mainstream titles that release in India,” said Kapasi.

After DVD and VCD prices saw a deep decline for popular mainstream Hindi movies, world cinema titles, although niche, are a major respite for home video majors like Excel, Moser Baer.
