NEW DELHI: In a case of suspected gang rivalry, four motorcycle-borne unidentified men opened fire at four men in northeast Delhi, injuring three of them, police said on Tuesday.

The men, suspected to be members of the Salim Pahelwan gang that operates in western Uttar Pradesh, shot lawyer Ahmed Ali, his brother Hashim, their relative Intezar and neighbour Abid outside Ali's house in Shahdara on late Monday.

Police said the assailants fired at least 12 rounds. Ali retaliated with few rounds of gun fire with his licensed pistol, but the assailants managed to escape unhurt.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast Delhi) Rajiv Ranjan said Hashim sustained five bullet injuries, while Intezar and Abid suffered two bullet injuries each. Ali was unhurt in the incident.

The injured men were admitted to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, where Hashim's condition was stated to be critical with bullet injuries on the chest, shoulder and legs.

"It seems a fallout of a gang war. Ali and Hashim's elder brother Guddu Chowdhury is wanted in the murder of Salim Pahelwan (killed in April this year). The family of Ali and Hashim has alleged that Salim's brother Naeem was behind the attack," Ranjan said.

"We are verifying the allegations. But no arrests have been made yet," he added.
