MUMBAI: Premier arts institution Osian's on Friday said it would soon venture into movie production.

"The movie production is expected to start within a year or so and obviously, we will be making the kind of films we support," the institution chairman Neville Tuli said.

"For the last decade we at Osian's are busy creating an artistic and financial platform for producing the right kind of movies," he said adding that many more movies like 'Chake De' and 'Tare Zameen Pe' were needed.

For a billion-strong nation, just two quality movies a year would not suffice, Tuli, who sees cinema as a weapon for social and economic change, said.

"Movies must say something. They should not be mere entertainment. There has to be quality and a thought process that are reflected in them," Tuli, the chairman of Osian's, India's first Arts Auction House, said.

Earlier, after declaring the two-day Osian's Cine Fan film festival of Asian and Arab movies open, Tuli deliberated on whether or not an individual can/should be institutionalised, at a panel discussion.

"India is on a verge of fundamental change which can not happen without the help of intelligentsia and artists. The individual has to dissolve into the institute to create and atmosphere conducive for social and economic change," he said.

Tuli, whose endeavour is to build a new holistic infrastructure for the Indian arts, culture and its education, said the West has successfully transformed idealistic thoughts into materialistic institutions.

"Now the need is to emulate the same in India also," he said.
