After Barkha Dutt, radio jockey Malishka, and the Vodafone pug, everyone has mass media on their list of preferred courses. One of the most sought after courses due to its high glamour quotient, students are falling over one another to get a seat in well-known colleges.

The Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media (BMM) was introduced by the University of Mumbai in the academic year 2000-01. Every year thousands of students apply at various colleges offering BMM. Considered a programme that offers entry into the world of journalism, advertising, filmmaking, public relations, and scripting, the course is offered by as many as 35 colleges in Mumbai.

“There are opportunities galore in the media,” says actor Anupam Kher. “With foreign production companies setting up shop in India and the increase in number of news and entertainment channels, the employment rate is very high.” Kher, who runs his own acting school, says it is the lure of instant fame and success that has made the media a popular career choice.

Popular radio jockey Malishka says media professionals get the opportunity to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. This, she says, acts as a magnet for students. “There is huge demand for creative people in the market,” she says. “Students who are not creatively inclined also end up joining these courses.”

Students who graduate in BMM are picked up by advertising agencies, film studios, production houses, newspapers, and television channels.

"Media is experiencing an upward curve with demand for more channels and newspapers,” says adman Prahlad Kakkar. “Advertising has also become a popular career for young graduates.” But, he cautions, there is more to the industry than meets the eye.
