MUMBAI: The film industry’s value chain integration model — production, exhibition, distribution all under one banner — is now being adapted for the music scene.

Blue Frog, a start-up in Mumbai, will integrate a music label, a music production company for in-house and third party assignments, a music studio and a lounge bar featuring live band performances under one banner.

Currently no music label in the country provides music production services under its own banner, nor does it own or offer separate premises for live performances in recreation clubs.

It has already roped in restaurateur Rahul Akerkar (owner of Mumbai’s Indigo lounge bar) as food and beverage partner. Blue Frog’s studio has been designed by Andy Munro, the acoustic designer for artists like U2’s Bono, Mark Knopfler and Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmore.

Launched in December 2007, Blue Frog, located in the Todi Mills compound in Lower Parel, has been functioning as a live music-cum-lounge bar in the city. The introduction of three new businesses — Blue Frog Production, Blue Frog Soundlabs, Blue Frog Records — is the next big step on the agenda, wherein Blue Frog will not only collaborate with international artists to create music for its label but also sign up new artists and composers from India. The company is already working on seven music albums that are slated for launch this year.

“An artist signed by our label can play at the club, record their album at the studios and do commercial work with the production house,” says Ashutosh Phatak, founding partner, Blue Frog.

Phatak is Joined by musician Dhruv Ghanekar and ad film-makers Mahesh Mathai, Srila Chatterjee and former investment banker Simran Mulchandani.

“Our purpose was to change the nature of the business by creating standardised composer rate cards and eliminating messy royalty issues. Blue Frog is also foraying into customised in-store radio channels, game audio design in a tie-up with Trine Animation Studios.
