Vidya Balan reveals why she’s roped in a new stylist to help improve her much-criticised dress sense and her obsession with perfection

If anyone who attended the Zee Cine Awards in London last week saw Vidya Balan’s performance, they could have easily been mistaken into thinking that she just danced on to the stage and performed. What they may not have seen was the hours of hard work and unending rehearsals that she put in to achieve the spontaneous effect.

“But that’s how I am. I want to make sure that everything I do is perfect. It may not turn out to be that way, but I will make sure that I do the best from my side,” she says with a smile when you question her about her seeming fixation with her act.

“In films, you have a lot of chances to correct your mistakes, but in a live performance, one mistake and you are out of favour with the audience. That is why I want to get it perfect. Also, it’s the first time that I am performing on Piyu bole from Parineeta, so that is really special for me.” Talking about Parineeta, which was her debut film, does she feel that she has come a long way since then? “Well, yes and no, but the last year has been good, with films like Heyy Babyy and Bhool    Bhulaiya, both of which did well at the
box office.”

But in spite of the success of Heyy    Babby, does she feel cheated when people comment on her dress sense in the film? After all, it was the butt of jokes even at a recent awards ceremony. “Not really, because I know that I am in a profession where there is a lot of scrutiny. If I can’t take that much, I don’t have a right to be here. It’s totally upto people to judge me and if I don’t meet their standards, then I have to buckle up and improve myself. I don’t mind it all,” she says candidly.

No wonder then that Vidya has made some changes in her designer sense at least. Designer Shabina Khan has now taken over and will in all probability be designing for her next few films.  “I am comfortable with her,” she says before heading off to do yet another rehearsal. Clearly, here is one perfectionist actress!
