‘I will soon start a restaurant’

Tarun Tahiliani wants to grow beyond his fashion label

Working for a noble cause has always been a welcome move and for designer Tarun Tahiliani, it’s no different.The designer has had many shows for charity before this and the latest in this lineup is the one he held at the Sheraton Towers in Singapore yesterday.

Set up with the aim to develop programmes and provide different opportunities to children with special needs so as to enhance their self-esteem and confidence, entrepreneurs Pinky Pant and Savi Kapoor are at the helm of this Singapore based organisation known as Sparkz. “Earlier, I had done shows for other charity causes like breast cancer and AIDS but this is the first time that I did something for the autistic children. The proceeds from the sale of passes and a part of the proceeds from the sale of the clothes will go towards the betterment of these children,” he reveals.

The children took an active part in the entertainment programme though they just stopped short of walking for Tarun’s show. “They were supposed to walk for me but then I felt that it wouldn’t be fair. I don’t want them to do fashion shows at such a young age. Many other designers may do it but to me, it’s a plain gimmick,” he elaborates.

But apart from doing his bit for charity, the designer also makes for an astute entrepreneur. Which probably explains why, in keeping with the current trend, he too is keen on going beyond his label. “I think aiming at becoming more than a fashion brand is a logical extension to our plans today. So yes, I am eying expansion and I’m even planning to start a restaurant soon,” he signs off.
