Kapoor will now be hosting yet another music show

Annu Kapoor is back with what he does best. The actor is hosting a new music-based show named, Junoon… Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka. Annu has always been associated with music-based shows since the Antakshri days. When quizzed whether it’s a deliberate move on his part, he says, “I am an artiste, and I want to follow my creative instincts. People always loved me in music-based shows. This time too, the production house approached me for the same. This is not a deliberate move; it’s just that when the producers approached me, the deal worked out. So, I am hosting Junoon.”

The show will be aired on NDTV Imagine and each team will have six contestants and will be mentored by a reputed personality from the music industry, namely, Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for the Sufi Team, Ila Arun for the Folk Team and Anand Raj Anand for the Filmy Team. In this show, the audience will be voting for a genre of music and not for individual singers.

When asked what genre he would prefer among the three, Annu says, “Though film music has all kinds of music in it, I would prefer Sufi any day as a listener. It has so much depth and it is so soothing for to ear and the heart.”

Annu, however, does not like the current impression of Sufi music that people have in mind. “People have misconceptions about Sufi music. To understand it, you need to understand Sufism, especially the history and the thought behind it. Today, people are selling some stupid music in the name of Sufi which I find extremely amusing,” he asserts.

So, is the show going to have authentic Sufi music? “I don’t know yet. I have just signed on the show, but I am yet to start shooting for it. I hope, they will honour the authenticity of the thought and passion that goes into Sufi music,” he says.

Annu is known for doing reality shows like Smart Shrimati or Antakshri, but has stayed away from daily soaps which rule the roost currently. Is this a conscious decision? “I guess I am not qualified for the soaps that are running on small screen now.” Does he think it’s not worthy enough for him? “I do not have any predetermined notion on this. But, about the soaps, specially the saas-bahu ones, the less said, the better,” he says with a grin.

Reportedly, he changed his surname Kapoor to Kapur following the current craze about numerology. “This is all rubbish. I still carry the name with which I started my film career in the '80s, that is Annu Kapoor,” he says.

Though he started his career with films, he has been out of it for quite  some time. The actor was last seen as Barrister Ram Choitrani in Aitraaz directed by Abbas-Mustan in 2004. What happening on the film front? “My film The Fakir of Venice which was supposed to be released in 2007 will be released very soon in the theaters. Besides that, I am also doing another film named Do Dilon Ke Khel Mein. I am considering a few projects, but won’t be able to talk about them right now,” he adds.
