“And everything I had to know, I heard it on the radio...” Roger Taylor’s words on Radio Ga ga — the Queen anthem that became synonymous with radio stations across the world — may soon ring true for Mumbai’s suburbs.

Residents of Bandra, Khar and Santa Cruz may soon have their own radio station with the community radio centre (CRC) being proposed recently. An initiative by Khar Bandra Santa Cruz Foundation (KBS), this is a first-of-its-kind concept to be introduced in western suburbs to create awareness on civic issues, community development and social inclusion.

Members of KBS made a presentation to the Information and Broadcasting (I & B) ministry in April and are awaiting its clearance. The brainchild of Navin Chandra, a KBS member and father of director Tanuja Chandra, the CRC will help relay messages during emergencies and in times of disaster.

“It is premature to talk about it as we have yet to procure the licence. We want to spread awareness on solid waste management, rainwater harvesting and the need for renewable energy. We will also broadcast programmes on health and BMC’s bylaws on cleanliness. We also announce examination dates for students, talk about global warming and pollution,” said Chandra. He stressed that the CRC will not broadcast music.

Madhu Poplai, another member of KBS, said this centre would also help advanced locality managements from Bandra, Khar and Santa Cruz in involving the youth from these areas.

“Initially, it will work for two hours. We plan to involve BMM students to provide them exposure to broadcasting media. We will also rope in professional RJs in the initial stages, but we will also bring in activists to talk to keep the cost low.”

BMC, however, did not approve of the initial plan to construct the CRC at a garden in Union Park. “But the civic authority plans to give us place for CRC in Bandra-Khar area,” said Poplai.

KBS will be supported by corporate sponsors and will also raise funds from within the community.
