While Smriti Iraani quitting and returning to Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is now history, Balaji honcho Ekta Kapoor is busy creating new history. The buzz is that designer Manish Malhotra has been roped in for her epic project Mahabharata.

“Manish will be apparently paid Rs 3 crore just for the sketches of the costumes. The research team wants to give the traditional costumes—including the saris and Amrapali costumes—a contemporary presentation, keeping the authenticity intact,” said a source. Manish confirmed, “Yes, I’m designing the costumes for the show. The concept is Ekta’s while the look will be done by me.” Ekta however brushed it away laughing, “I cannot comment on anything  now.”

Ask her if Kyunkii has witnessed a resurrection after Smriti’s re-entry and she disagreed, “The TRPs of Kyunkii have always been good—with or without Smriti. It was our personal equation that was marred. When that was set right, she returned.”
And where does that leave Gautami Kapoor (the second Tulsi)? “I’ve a huge plan for her. I’ll be offering her my biggest show. I absolutely love her,” asserted Ekta.

Does she feel sad about protégé Prachi Desai (Kasamh Se) moving over to films? “Prachi is Balaji’s child. Even my parents are very fond of her. Suneeta (Menon, astrologer) has said that hers is one of the luckiest charts. We wish her the best,” said Ekta.

What about actor Pulkit Samrat who wants to bury the hatchet with her? “Smriti was a friend. She didn’t say anything derogatory. But Pulkit shot his mouth off. But I’m not a bad person and won’t stop anybody’s growth,” she answered.

Asked if she’s often misunderstood and she replied, “People who have a temper are not necessarily bad. With me, what you see is what you get. I don’t ever say anything behind somebody’s back. There have been sweet-talking people who’ve back-stabbed me.” Ekta cites the example of Salman Khan, “Salman’s known for both—his temper and his heart of gold. That means he can’t keep two faces—one at home and one for the world!”

Stressing that work is sacred she said, “I believe in being a karmayogi. Loyalty is huge in Japan and China, where people believe in giving their life for their company.”
