Four months ago, Sheila and Raj Mani Jaiswal had cried foul at Sion Hospital, alleging that the authorities swapped their “baby boy” for a girl. But on Thursday, police claimed that they got reports of the DNA test, which proved that Sheila was the biological mother of the infant girl.

“The results clearly state that Sheila is the mother. We are deciding the criminal section under which she would be booked,” said Mahadeo Gundewadi, senior inspector, Shahu Nagar police station.

On December 18, Sheila, 30, gave birth to a baby. There had been medical complications before the child birth. A cervical tear led to her being rushed to Dharavi’s Urban Health Centre, and from there to Sion Hospital.

When Sheila found that the baby was a girl, she alleged foul play by the hospital authorities. She and her husband, a taxi driver, approached Shahu Nagar police station and registered a complaint against the hospital. The couple from Dharavi alleged that after Sheila gave birth, the ayah (attendant) didn’t allow them to see the baby. When Sheila protested, a helper slapped her and manhandled her.

Hospital sources said that as the Jaiswals had refused to take custody of the child till the DNA reports were out, the baby girl has, ever since, been kept in the paediatric ward of the hospital. “She is fed milk from the hospital’s milk bank,” said a doctor on condition of anonymity.

Now, with the DNA reports proving that the couple had “bluffed”, police have taken a stern stand. “Since the report is positive, we have issued a notice to the Jaiswals, asking them to come forward and take custody of the child,” said Gundewadi. Police were also consulting a public prosecutor to decide on the criminal sections that would be slapped on the couple. A police team would go after the Jaiswals if they do not respond to the notice.
