MUMBAI: Just before the IPL games are about to begin, Shah Rukh Khan’s proposed entertainment act on the field is stuck in the works. He has refused to buckle under the West Bengal government’s demand for entertainment tax.

The West Bengal government wants to charge tax for a 10-minute entertainment interlude that Shah Rukh has been planning for cricket fans during the games. If the state government refuses to waive the tax, either ticket prices will have to be raised or the show  will have to be chopped.

Khan told DNA: “This is not a three-hour show, for which one would charge entertainment tax. I won’t pay the tax as I don’t think one needs to take the (ticket) price beyond Rs150.

Why should a common man pay Rs30 extra for 10 minutes of entertainment? At any cost I will not increase the ticket prices.”

He continued, “I did plan a bit of an act for 10 minutes in between the [cricket] show. But if the government charges me tax for that, I will have to take the ticket prices to Rs180, which I don’t think is fair on spectators. At the current rate we will be losing money, which I cannot afford.”

“I am very keen that the tickets shouldn’t be priced at more than Rs150. After all the number crunching, I asked my people to let me how much this whole thing would cost me. They quoted an X amount. I said ‘add 10% profit to that and price the tickets accordingly’. So, now the tickets have been priced at Rs150.”

When asked what he would do if the government doesn’t budge, he said optimistically, “My people are working on it. The associations have been very kind. I am sure it will work in our favour,” he said.
