Yesteryear stars make TV their comeback vehicle, thanks to the channel boom

You may call it small screen but it truly means big opportunities. If you think that we are talking about the current flavours of Bollywood - Shah Rukh Khan and Vidya Balan - both of whom all got their first breaks on this medium. We have yet another point to make.

Actors, who had long back bid adieu to big screen and had retired from acting, are slowly and surely making a comeback. Thanks to the recent market boom of television channels.

Yesteryears stars - Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna, Zarina Wahab, Leena Chandavarkar, Sharmila Tagore and Tanuja - all have their soaps lined up on different channels.

“Television is a big playing field and provides many opportunities. It depends on how the opportunities are utilised. If there are scopes for veterans like us, we will of course be there to utilise it,” said Tanuja, who has stepped into TV with the soap Babban Bhai VS Bimla Tai (on 9X).

Tanuja doesn’t seem bothered about the ‘small screen’ tag that precedes a TV actor, “The most important part is that TV allows actors to communicate with the audience on a one-on-one basis.”

Vinod Khanna, who debuts on TV with the soap Mere Apne reiterates the same sentiment. “I have received an overwhelming response for my character in Mere Apne. Moreover, I was confident that the television stars are no longer looked down upon and enjoy as much popularity as the film stars,” said Khanna. For some like Zarina Wahab, it was the sheer comfort actor that made her opt for the medium. "I took up a TV show because they don't involve as much travelling as films do," said the actor.

The chhota parda now has a wider reach. And according to actor-producer Smriti Z Iraani, it is also a reason why yesteryears superstars are increasingly opting for the medium.

“TV is no longer the ‘chota parda’ in terms of its popularity and reach. It is almost giving films a run for its money. This could be one of the reasons why some people are opting for this medium,” said Smriti.
