KOCHI: Re-mixes, reality shows, Bollywood music and Western culture were not harming Indian classical music but actually popularised it, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, creator of Mohan veena said.

Reality shows are good for music as they are popularizing Indian music among youngesters, Bhatt told here on Monday.

He will be performing 'Jugalbandi', a fusion of Hindustani and Carnatic music with Ravi Kiran, creator of 'chitra veena' here this evening.

South India and West Bengal were very well connected with art and culture and the audience was very responsive he said.

Bhatt, who has performed in various parts of Kerala, said the state had not been much influenced by western culture.

He lamented that Bollywood stars occupied lot of space in the print media but at the same time even acclaimed musicians have not received the same treatment, he said.

There were number of television channels, some even dedicated to animals. However, there is still no channel dedicated to Indian classical music, he lamented.

Ravi Kiran, who was also present, said the Indian classical music was not languishing and instead was  last few years have been 'boom time' for Indian classical music, which was not 'languishing'.

Bhatt and Kiran said media should play an important role in popularising the Indian classical music by 'creating pride and passion' for the music. 'Our culture is over 2000 years old and the rest of the world comes to learn Indian culture. It should be preserved', they said.

The two internationally acclaimed musicians have been performing jointly since the past seven years in various parts of the country and abroad.

'Though the nature of our instruments are same, our music is different. This is the best form of National Integration, Ravi Kiran said.

'Jugalbandi is more about meeting of minds than music. When there is meeting of minds, there is harmony and there are no ego clashes. It is a concert not a contest', they opined.
