It’s time to clean up grime

Is this how we want to be represented? By a man who is probably going to be tried for human trafficking and forgery? How often do we hear of corrupt MPs and shrug it off?

Disgust. That is the first word that comes to mind upon hearing of the shocking attempt by Babubhai Katara to take a woman with him to Canada as a potential illegal immigrant. That he also tried to do so on his wife’s passport makes the affair even more shameful.

If this was being done by an ordinary citizen, we would have turned the page and moved on. But the perpetrator is a MP, who is supposed to uphold the constitution and represent not only his own constituency, but also the nation.

Is this how we want to be represented? By a man who is probably going to be tried for human trafficking and forgery? How often do we hear of corrupt MPs and shrug it off? But the action of this parliamentarian has plumbed new depths. He could have been from any party; that by itself is not significant. Many parties have given tickets to those with criminal pasts, who become our legislators and parliamentarians.

We want answers. But more than that, we want solution and some accountability from political parties. They cannot talk piously of the falling standards in public life if they themselves contribute to it. It is time politicians heard what the citizens are trying to say — enough is enough.
