MUMBAI: Naval officer Emile Jerome Matthew, accused in the Neeraj Grover murder case, has expressed his desire to give his confession statement. His girlfriend has already done so. However, crime branch officers say his statement will hardly make a difference as they already have enough evidence against him.

Matthew and Kannada actor Maria Susairaj have been arrested for allegedly murdering Grover, a creative head in a television production house. “We have plenty of evidence against the accused. Also Susairaj’s statement explains the series of events,” said joint commissioner of police, crime, Rakesh Maria.

A crime branch source said Matthew had at first been very stubborn during interrogation, but he has mellowed down now. The source added that soon after Susairaj made her confession, he said he too wanted to.

Matthew’s confession might only explain if Susairaj has been downplaying her role in the crime.

Last week, Susairaj’s six-page confession statement was recorded before a magistrate. Police said the confession statement fully corroborated her statement to the police and there were no new revelations.

Meanwhile, Susairaj’s parents approached the crime branch on Saturday to seek permission to meet their daughter who is lodged in the crime branch unit 9 lock-up at Bandra. Susairaj’s lawyer Murthy Acharya has written to the court to be allowed to interview Susairaj and also requested that her parents be allowed to meet her.
