NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is set to launch online courses in three subjects from this academic session to help students pursue higher education.

"Online is the new trend in higher education. We are offering three courses online from the July session this year," IGNOU Vice Chancellor Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai said.

The courses to be offered in online mode are Masters Degree in Library Science, Cyber Law and Intellectual Property. All the academic activities like admission, classes, assignments and examination will be held online under this mode, he said.

In comparison to its courses being offered in distant mode, the courses in online mode will be costlier, he said.

The students will have to furnish their details through Internet to get admission while the university will provide the course materials and classes on its website.

The progress in the particular course will be monitored by the university which will give required
assignments to students.

"In fact we are developing online platform for all the existing courses," Pillai said.

The courses would cater specific group of students who are either employed somewhere or are otherwise busy and want to improve their skills.

"The courses will have maximum impact if Internet penetration is very high," he said.

There will be proper mechanism for quality assurance. There is a quality assurance system internationally, Pillai said.

In online admission system, the varsity will have a payment gateway system through which the students can make their payments.

Students can make the payment from their credit cards and will not have to pay any commission for this.

They will have to take a print out of the payment and submit it along with their documents at the regional centres after which the admission will be through.
