CWC plans to form panel to find ways to revive party

NEW DELHI: After a string of defeats in 13 states, the Congress honchos have decided to learn from Rahul Gandhi’s connect with the people.

Realising that “election campaigns alone are not enough to win” and indirectly endorsing Rahul “discover India” tour and mass contact programme, it has decided to go in for “sustained year-round contact with the people.” In an attempt to indicate to the BJP that though the party may be down but not out, the Congress said it has never allowed “despondency and inertia to overtake its functioning and made it clear that it will “confront and combat the BJP, ideologically and electorally.”

The party said “while it is true that the BJP has won elections in some states, the Congress believes that its emergence is detrimental to the very fabric of our society and to our secular, nationalist ethos.”

“There is a fundamental difference between BJP’s vision of India and the Congress vision of India. Our vision unites, the BJP’s divides,” the party said.

“It is clear that election campaigns alone are not enough to win. To convert massive mobilisation of the campaigns into votes, there has to be a sustained year-round contact with the people, to understand their hopes and aspirations and address their daily concerns,” said a draft resolution adopted at a brainstorming session of Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body.

“This can only be done through an organisation which is strong and vibrant at the grassroots and which has clear lines of responsibility and accountability.” the resolution said.

Apart from Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, 32 other members and some permanent invitees were present. The party decided to set up ‘small committee’ to suggest ways to revive the party. Sonia Gandhi will name the members and the proposed panel will submit its report within 15 days.

The Congress brass also discussed the inflation and the prices of petroleum products. Sonia Gandhi stressed the need to seriously deliberate on the reasons for the defeat of the party.
