KANPUR: Upset over poor academic record, a girl student of Indian Institute of Technology here allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling, hours before the 40th annual convocation of the institution.

Toya Chatterjee, a resident of Kolkata and the fourth year student of B-Tech in Biological Sciences, was found hanging from the ceiling in her hostel room by her father last night, Assistant Registrar K V Satyamurthi said on Saturday.

Chatterjee (22) failed in two subjects but did not inform her parents, he said, adding her father arrived here yesterday to attend the convocation ceremony today thinking her daughter would receive the B-Tech degree.

Chatterjee's father, who was staying at a hotel in the city, found her daughter dead in her room when he came last night to meet her, he said.

A suicide note was recovered from her room which read "Papa, I failed in two subjects but did not inform you about this. I won't be able to receive the degree during this convocation since I could not pass. I'm ashamed. Please take care of Mummy."

The body has been sent for postmortem, he said, adding a committee comprising senior professors of the institution has been constituted to probe into the matter.
