Minister seeks Rs 10 Cr annual grant

KANNUR: The Kerala Government should make an annual grant of Rs 10 crore per year to offset the 'huge' loss suffered by Pariyaram Cooperative Medical College Hospital on account of conducting courses in medicine and other paramedical subjects as per government fixed rates, Cooperation Minister G Sudhakaran said on Thursday.

The College, which stands tall among the various medical colleges in the country, is incurring over Rs 16 crore loss by way of imparting courses in medicine and other para medical courses per year and the loss could be partially offset if government provided Rs 10 crore grant per year to help the college run as per government fee structure, for various courses, he told a press meet at the College near here.

The college always wants to levy the government fixed fee structure and an annual grant of Rs 10 crore was essential to enable the college sustain and carry out the pro-people programmes, Sudhakaran, who was here to attend the convocation ceremony of the first batch of the B.Sc Nursing classes, said.

The Director Board of the college has approved holding of an international Medical Seminar in August next and has sought approval from the Centre for elevating the Medical College to the status of a deemed university, Sudhakaran, who is also Chairman of the Academy of Medical Sciences, which runs the college, said.

He said the Medical college has been able to enhance the daily income from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4.20 lakh with more patients availing services of the medical college.
