NEW DELHI: The Rajasthan government led by Vasundhara Raje must quit as it had lost the moral right to rule after the death of 35 people in clashes, Congress MP Sachin Pilot said on Sunday after being denied permission to visit Dausa district to meet agitating Gujjar leaders.
"The Vasundhara Raje government has lost its moral right and constitutional authority to continue in power. It has to admit the misgivings and must quit office now. You cannot terrorise a community," Pilot said.
His comments came after at least 35 people including two policemen were killed on Friday and Saturday as police opened fire on agitating Gujjars in Sikandara in Dausa. The community has been demanding Scheduled Tribe status to get better job and education opportunities.
"Today I went to the Sawai Mansingh hospital in Jaipur where authorities have refused to do post-mortem on 14 bodies," said Pilot, who is also from the Gujjar community and represents Dausa in the Lok Sabha.
"I am condemning any kind of violence, whether it is by my community or others. But the government should take some initiative to prevent violence. The government should have done something to prevent the present violence. It should have been done some time ago. You cannot do politics with a divided society."
The MP wanted to visit Sikandara in Dausa district, where Gujjars had laid siege to the Jaipur-Agra Highway. He wanted to speak to legislators, but the district administration Sunday prevented him from doing so, citing the law and order situation there.
"Yesterday, 22 people were killed in my district (Dausa). I wanted to visit my district to calm down the agitated people and visit the victims of violence. However, the state government instructed that I should not go there.
"Today they sent me a letter prohibiting me from visiting my own district. This attitude does not speak well for a democracy," said Pilot.
