NEW DELHI: Zoos in India will soon be able to share information online with their counterparts across the world, updating status and breeding programmes of the animals in a scientific manner.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA), an autonomous body of the Environment Ministry, is in the process of signing an agreement for membership with the US-based International Species Information System (ISIS), which has worldwide presence with 700 members.

"We will soon sign an agreement with the ISIS which will facilitate international collecting and sharing of animals and their environment for zoos and aquarium," BR Sharma, Member Secretary of Central Zoo Authority of India said.

Talking about the needs and benefits of availing such facility, Sharma said, "ISIS is the largest organization having a huge database including historic data for hundreds of thousands of zoo animals of more than 4,000 species."

The move would also help the 62 zoos in the country to get first hand information about animals in several zoos across the world as well exchange animals whenever required.

"For instance, through the online system, it would be easy for the members to directly contact his counterpart in another country and facilitate early exchange of the animals as desired. Presently a lot of time is consumed in tracking the animals required for exchanging," the official said.

The CZA will pay Rs 25 lakh as membership fees per year for the first three years to ISIS after which we will ensure that zoos themselves come forward to pay the money.

The step has been approved by ISIS executive director Nate Flesness who was in the national capital recently to attend an international conference on 'India's Conservative Breeding Initiative' organised by CZA.
