NEW DELHI: Defence minister AK Antony has ordered an inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the conduct of examinations within the National Defence Academy (NDA).

DNA has reported over the past few days about answer sheets being manipulated at the institution that shapes officers of the country’s armed forces.

According to authoritative sources, defence minister AK Antony on Thursday  asked defence secretary Vijay Singh to inquire into the DNA exposé. In the academy at Khadakwasla, near Pune, over 1,800 cadets undergo training at a given point of time to be officers in the armed forces. The cadets get a bachelors degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Documents accessed by DNA showed irregularities in the evaluation of cadets’ answer sheets. In fact, the documents reveal that irregularities were first recorded on July 10, 2000, when a senior faculty member wrote to the NDA commandant, raising concerns over alleged fudging of marks.

Sanjeev Kumar Mago, a civilian gazetted officer with the political science department, had pointed out that nearly 100 cadets were given excess marks “in certain cases” for the questions they didn’t attempt in 1998. Mago wrote to the commandant in 2000 and 2003, and followed it with another letter to the defence secretary in 2006.

DNA also reported that some other senior faculty members had levelled allegations that answer sheets were manipulated. Some faculty members had even complained to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) about corruption and manipulation of marks.

The spokesman for the defence ministry told DNA that Antony had asked the ministry for “detailed factual position”, a euphemism for a preliminary independent inquiry, on the entire controversy. Further action would be based on the details, the spokesman said.
