NEW DELHI: Even 10 years after it was formed to unravel the larger conspiracy behind Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Authority (MDMA) of the CBI has failed to provide answers that Priyanka Gandhi wanted from her father’s assassin Nalini in Vellore jail.

And the MDMA, which was carved out from CBI in 1998, will get another extension next month.

Priyanka Gandhi visited Vellore central jail last month to meet Nalini to find answers to questions like: Why was her father killed, who gave the orders to the killers, was the LTTE involved, were the killers also LTTE sympathisers? Even after 17 years of the assassination, these questions rattled her mind and MDMA has made no headway.

“MDMA officials are in touch with 13 countries to collect specific information about suspects and it is keeping the Chennai court informed about all the progress made in the investigation on routine basis,” said a CBI official. It is a fact that MDMA still hasn’t tracked down the key man behind the assassination — arms dealer and LTTE’s main financier K Padmanathan, or KP. According to CBI, KP made a lot of investments in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, but it could not lay hands on anything that led to him.

“The investigation cannot be wrapped up or closed because it is not a simple assassination. Investigations of cases like Kennedy’s assassination, Diana’s accident and all such complex cases go on for long,” said a CBI official. He however, also pointed out that no matter which government is in power, MDMA will continue to get extensions for its investigation.
