NEW DELHI: Three Indians working on a crucial road project in Afghanistan have been killed in a suicide attack on Saturday morning.

Five other personnel of the Border Roads Organisation as well as two Afghans are seriously injured and have been evacuated to a hospital in Zaranj, the nearest town.

Condemning this latest act of terror, aimed at frightening Indian workers involved in the 215 kilometre road project linking Afghanistan to Iran, New Delhi said such attacks will not deter India from continuing to work for the reconstruction of war torn Afghanistan.

The attack took place between nine o’clock and nine thirty this morning. The Taliban have always been opposed to the construction of the road, which will help India to cut cost of transporting goods to Afghanistan.

The names of the two from among the three killed are MP Singh and C Govindaswamy, but no details are available. Bishram Oroan, Vikram Singh, Muhammad Nazin Khan, Anil Kumar Thampee and Mayaram have been injured.

The government while offering condolences to the families of the victims of the terror attack, said that compensation and insurance for the victims will be disbursed immediately.

For India the safety of its workers in Afghanistan is a major concern, especially those who are working outside the capital, Kabul. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police are guarding the camps of the Indian workers in Afghanistan.

The Zaranj-Deleram highway, which, when completed, could be the life-line, Hamid Karzai’s government desperately needs. India can send its goods through the Iranian port of Chabhar down to all areas of Afghanistan. Pakistan could then be by-passed.
Islamabad does not allow Indian goods to go through its territory to Afghanistan.

The Zaranj-Deleram highway is almost complete, and is expected to be handed over to the Afghan government.
