NEW DELHI: The Tibetan government-in-exile fears that the ongoing uprising may give the Chinese government and military a reason to “commit grave atrocities on Tibetans” post Olympic games.

Prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Samdhong Rinpoche said, “we hope that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) will act wisely and invite a dialogue with us. But our greatest fear is that the PRC’s repression of Tibetans may become harsher after the games as a backlash to the uprising.”

Stating that his government was not supporting the violent disruption of the Olympic torch relay, he said, “Violent disruption of the relay does not have our support. But people are free not to agree with our stand in a democratic society.”

However, the defending the events in London and Paris, Rinpoche said, “those were not violent disruptions. They were just emotional outbursts of people who support the Tibetan cause.” The Tibetan Youth Congress had earlier issued a threat that it would breach the security of the torch. Reacting to the threat, the PM said, “they are not a part of the Tibetan government-in-exile and are free to do what they want to. They do not have our support.”

Members of the government-in-exile said that the timing of the uprising and the Olympic games in Beijing was just a coincidence.

Rinpoche said, “we fear that the Chinese government will arrest innocent Tibetans and eliminate them without giving them a fair trial. They have already turned Tibet into a killing field.” Meanwhile, thousands of Tibetan demonstrators carried 154 shrouded effigies, representing the compatriots they believed were killed in a crackdown on anti-China protests in Tibet.
