MEW DELHI: A businessman was shot dead in broad daylight in the Kalkaji area of South Delhi on Monday morning triggering panic among people in the area.

Arun Gupta, 47, was driving from his Kalkaji home to Chandni Chowk where he ran an electronics shop at 10.40  am when three unidentified men on a bike stopped his car and pumped two bullets into him. Gupta was attacked barely 100 meters away from his home. He is survived by wife and two sons.

The killers managed to escape and the police are yet to identify them. Gupta was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital where he was declared dead. His body was later taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for post mortem.

Shakeel, who runs a tea stall near the crime scene said: "There were three people on the bike. The two riding pillion were not wearing helmets. They fired at the Wagon-R car in which he (Gupta) was travelling and fled. No one came forward to stop them but there was panic in the area for hours after the crime."

Another eyewitness, Bobby, said the attackers first knocked on the side window of Gupta's car near a roundabout, asking him to halt. "One man got down from the bike and fired a bullet into Gupta's head as soon he wound down the window. One assailant shouted `he is still alive, fire more.' One of them fired a bullet at Gupta's chest and they fled."

Bobby said she  tried to stop them, hitting them with her purse. "There were so many people on the road at that time but no one dared to act," she added. Bobby then called the police and Gupta's family.

The police suspect that the murder was the result of either a family feud over property or some personal vendetta. Gupta's family members said that property dispute between family members may have indeed led to the accident. "There was a dispute between Gupta and his brothers-in-law BK Mittal and Sunny Mittal after the death of his father-in-law over property. His mother-in-law was trying to settle the issue," said a family member.

"We are taking statements of eyewitnesses and family members of the victim. Sketches of the accused are being made with the help of eyewitness accounts," said HS Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (south).
