Fiona alleges police-criminal nexus, Naik wants UK govt to disclose her antecedents

PANAJI: Reacting to mother of murdered UK teen’s mother Fiona Mackeown’s contention that a drug mafia is in cahoots with the police and some politicians, state home minister Ravi S Naik urged Britain to disclose the mission and antecedents of Mackeown, who he claims is trying to malign India’s image as a safe tourist destination.

“She is simply trying to divert the main case of her daughter’s rape and murder to malign Goa and India with ulterior motives.”

“There must have been some strong lobby of politicians or vested business interests including hotels behind her outbursts against the Goa police, whose investigation is on the right track,’’ Naik said.

Visibly perturbed at what he termed as ‘’wild allegation’’ against him and the DGP, the home minister sought to know the source of her income to visit Goa often and move about here and there, leaving her minor girl to her own fate in Anjuna.

Earlier, the Goa police  questioned Mackeown saying it was routine questioning to clarify some aspects of the case. Her lawyer Vikram Varma  said the questions were soft and not related to negligence, Varma said.

However, Mackeown has alleged that the cops are just harassing her  and that she has already been  questioned once early during the investigation.

A BBC report quotes her saying that the cops are trying to convince her me that it is a simple case of drowning and that she must take her body back home.

Two arrests have been made so far in the case including Samson D’Souza, a barman and Placido Carvalho, a drug trader who have both confessed to the crime. While Samson is charged for drugging, raping and killing the girl, Placido has been accused of drugging and conspiring with Samson in the murder.

There have been earlier reports suggesting that the cops might re-open previous cases of tourists who have been killed under mysterious circumstances in the state. Several foreign tourists have been murdered in Goa over the last few months.
