BSP calls for divison of UP into smaller states

Mayawati said she has asked PM Manmohan Singh for divison of the state into three separate units of Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western Uttar Pradesh.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati said on Saturday she has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for divison of the state into three separate units of Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western Uttar Pradesh.
     
While addressing workers at the party's office here on the birth anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram, the chief minister said she has already written a letter to the prime minister for carving out Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western UP.
    
When asked about Mayawati government's favouring creation of smaller states to be carved out of Uttar Pradesh on Friday, the prime minister had said that the Centre would consider if a proposal to this effect comes from the state government.
    
Meanwhile, Mayawati also released a book written by her "a travelogue of my struggle -ridden life and bahujan movement" on the occasion.
    
A large number of party workers from all over the state, including MLAs, gathered at the office.
