The first anniversary day of Nandigram violence saw rallies and protests across Kolkata
KOLKATA: Politicians and intellectuals observed the first anniversary of Nandigram police firing here on Friday through varied forms of protest demonstrations and rallies, crippling normal life in the city for a significant period during the busy hours of a working day.

On March 14, 2007, 14 persons were killed at Nandigram in police firing.

However, apart from a single public meeting by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Friday morning, the heat of anniversary protest demonstrations was not felt much in Nandigram.

Even Mamata herself hastily wrapped up her public meeting at Adhikaripara in Nandigram and returned to Kolkata to organise her protest rally. However, in an attempt to give a symbolic twist to the rally, the Trinamool chief led the rally carrying a metal pot containing “soil from Nandigram”, she had collected in the morning.

Her three-hour rally from south to central Kolkata in the afternoon created traffic snarls at a number of important junctions of the city thus crippling normal life. The West Bengal unit of Congress, led by the Union broadcasting minister and the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president Priyaranjan Dasmunshi also organised a silent protest march at the same time from north to central Kolkata, creating traffic jams there as well.

Along with the politicians, intellectuals and students from different educational institutions also organised protest demonstrations at two different locations in central and north Kolkata.

At central Kolkata, a group of intellectuals observed ‘Nandigram Day’ by offering garlands and flowers at a memorial constructed in the memory of those killed in police firing last year.

Addressing her rally, Mamta said, “We may forget our own names, but not of Nandigram,” vowing to finish the Left Front rule in West Bengal in the coming elections.
