Hosting rave parties will be an expensive affair now. It could cost double what it did a few months back as the drugs used or consumed in such parties have become costlier in the Mumbai drug market.
Prices of drugs like cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy, acid, mandrax, heroin, brown sugar, charas and ganja have soared by 50 per cent, thanks to both increased demand on the one end and subdued supply by the drug suppliers.
The low supply in turn is thanks to a strict vigil continually kept by officials of the anti-narcotic cell (ANC) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the city.
ANC deputy commissioner of police Dilip Shrirao said, “This has happened because of the vigil and the arrest of drug suppliers.” Shrirao said that in the past 15 days alone, they have solved six cases and arrested suppliers carrying 34.4 kilogram of drugs.
He said that cannabis was being transported from Kashmir and northern parts of India, while ganja are brought in to the city from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. “The high-end drugs dealers are usually the Nigerians. In February this year, we nabbed 13 Nigerians and seized half a kg of cocaine worth Rs1.6 crore in the international market,” he added.
A peddler said, “The police claim is all bunkum. It is baseless that the scarcity in the supply is because of the arrest of peddlers and suppliers.”
The peddler said the consumption rate and demand for the drugs have gone up. “I have noticed that the price increase for drugs is a Mumbai phenomenon. They are much lower in Bangalore, Ooty and other cities,” he added.
