LONDON: A young girl who went out with Scarlette Keeling hours before she was killed said the murdered teen was desperate in her mother’s absence.

Scarlette, 15, was left in Goa with her 25-year-old boyfriend Julio Lobo while Fiona MacKeown, her partner Rob Clarke and six other children went travelling in Karnataka.

“Scarlette suddenly blurted out that she was sleeping with Julio. She said she didn’t really like him but she was doing it because it meant that she had food, transport and a roof over her head,” said Ruby, Scarlette’s friend.

Dutch Ruby, 16, was holidaying in Goa at the same time as Scarlette. She spoke to The Daily Mail at her home in the south of Spain about the fateful night that her friend was eventually killed.

“That evening Julio was feeling ill so he stayed home. I wasn’t planning to go out either but Scarlette talked me into it,” said Ruby. “She told me she was sleeping with Julio because he had a motorbike and bought her food and drink. I was shocked,” she said.

Shortly afterwards, the girls headed into town. “We bought our first Bacardi Breezer at a shop near where I was staying and drank it in a taxi on the way to a disco bar called the Nine bar,” said Ruby. “We had another Breezer at the bar but it was empty. So we moved to a beach bar where we had another two or three Breezers, one or two beers and a tequila shot,” she added.

“We were quite drunk by the end of it and got a taxi back to my place. But Scarlette only stayed for five minutes in my room before we said our goodbyes and promised to stay in touch. It must have been about 1 am when she left,” Ruby said.

Ruby was going back to Spain shortly and Scarlette’s mother had also called her that day to say that they were making plans to return home.

After Scarlette left Ruby she appears to have returned to the beach bars where British witness Mike saw her high on a cocktail of LSD, ecstasy and cocaine. He also allegedly saw her at 5am lying on the ground outside the bar with a barman on top of her. An hour-and-a-half later Scarlette’s body was found on the beach.
